Peru – A True Paradijs of Birds

We are very happy that we can finally add Peru as one of our preferred destinations for a birding and wildlife holiday. We recently did a photographic “recce” tour, visiting important parts of the country and the overwhelming number of birds and other wildlife amazed us.A quote of the late Theodore Parker is absolutely right: Being here is like being a child visiting a huge store filled with new and fascinating toys”
Peru has more than 1800 species of birds and with this number is second of all countries in the world. Peru holds the record for most species (650) seen in one single place. We only can say you will not regret joining us on one of our future tours to this magnificent birding destination.

Our tour will cover 3 completely different areas of Peru.

We will start in Northern Peru, flying from Lima to Tarapoto and travelling all the way back to Jaen, from where we fly back to Lima. This route is packed with endemics and restricted-range threatened species. Facilities are generally good and travel is easy. We will have a stop of some days in Moyobamba, going from there to the lodge at Abra Patricia which is a highlight of the route, along with the Marvelous Spatuletail reserve at Huembo where male Spatuletails can be seen at the feeders.

Before going on to the Amazon region we will stay a day in the Lima area. From here we will visit some interesting sites such as the Pucusana fishing port, having a boat-ride around the port, the Lomas de Asia Reserve, approximately 10,000 hectares of coastal hills covered by seasonal vegetation fed by the humidity of the marine fog and the Villa Marshes, located within the municipal limits of the city of Lima. This site is a coastal lagoon with brackish water and abundant emergent vegetation. The wetland is situated in the desert and the main source of water is of underground origin. It is a habitat for waterfowl typical of coastal Peru. For the final part of our tour we will fly to Puerto Maldonado (with a stop in Cusco) to visit the Peruvian Amazon.  This is the fourth largest rainforest in the world, with a remarkable biodiversity in terms of flora and fauna. The rainforest is home to more than 800 bird species and a variety of mammals. We will stay in 2 excellent lodges with all modern comforts. From here we will explore the area by boat and using the extensive forest trails. There are several Clay licks along the river where hundreds of Macaws and Parakeets can be seen every day. This is a real spectacle! For many travellers a visit to Peru must include a visit (optional) to the famous sites of Machu Pichu. This visit starts from Cusco where we have a stop on our way back from Puerto Maldonado to Lima. We have set up a very interesting itinerary to visit all top locations guided by a professional tour guide. Not being the objective, but Machu Pichu is also a good place to see a variety of interesting birds.

Reserving your place is both easy and inexpensive!
