Morocco – 3 Days Short Breaks tour description
We meet at the Tarifa ferry terminal for boarding the 0900 ferry for Tanger. Here you will be met by your driver and guide for the next 3 days. After clearing customs in Tanger we will take a slow drive on the old coastal road to Asilah and hope to be able to view the birds of this Atlantic haven. We aim to book into our Hotel and take lunch in Asilah or Larache. Our afternoon will see us visit the magnificent marshlands north of Larache. The lagoons, estuary and marshes should produce some memorable sightings such as Red-knobbed Coot, Long-legged Buzzard, Purple Gallinule, Glossy Ibis and if we get lucky Moustached Warbler. Hopefully we will have time to also visit the beach area and look for Audouin’s and Slender-billed Gulls. Returning to our hotel in Tanger we will have time to relax before going for dinner in our hotel restaurant.
Today it is necessary to take an early breakfast in order to arrive at Merja Zerga by 0900. We say an early breakfast but not too early at 0730. We meet our *MGS guide at Moulay Bousselham where we will set-off to explore the lagoon and surrounding wetlands. The area, declared a biological reserve in 1978 and a Ramsar site in 1980, is one of the largest lagoons in Morocco. The area is famous for providing a site for rare breeding birds, migrating birds and very large numbers of wintering birds. Our target bird here is the very elusive Marsh Owl. After touring the perimeter of the lagoon, we will arrive back at the small port of Moulay Bousselham to connect with our scheduled boat trip around the lagoon and the mouth of the estuary, an excursion lasting approximately 1 hour. After lunch in the village we will spend the afternoon searching the smaller northern lagoons which form the Merjas of the Rharb. Arriving back at our hotel late afternoon, we will have time to relax before having dinner at our hotel. If time permits we can visit the old fishing port of Asilah. * MGS (see below)
At last a leisurely breakfast, a normal event for Spanish Nature tours! When we are ready for our departure from the hotel, we will head north on the old coastal road to the Oued Tahadart. Here there will be opportunities to view Gull, Tern and Wader species. After watching the birds of the estuary we will double-back on ourselves and take the quiet inland road to the Tanger Peninsula. The area here is probably the best in Morocco for such notable species as Great Bustard, wintering Common Cranes and other elusive specialty birds of this wonderful country. We hope to be able to take our time here as often birds like Great Bustard can be hard to spot, also with small lagoons and marginal vegetation there are ample opportunities to turn-up something unusual! We will take lunch in one of the small villages on the plains and after wind our way slowly back to the ferry terminal at Tanger. We will aim to depart Tanger by 1630. We are confident that the sights and sounds of the past 3 days will have been a thrill and memorable occasion for all those involved on this fantastic short tour.
